MTV Movie Awards: 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Tops Nominations



The Force is strong with the 2016 MTV Movie Awards.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens scored a leading 11 nominations, it was announced Tuesday morning, including one for movie of the year, where JJ Abrams' hit sequel will face off against Avengers: Age of Ultron, Creed, Deadpool, Jurassic World and Straight Outta Compton.
The Force Awakens is also up for best female performance (Daisy Ridley), breakthrough performance (Ridley and John Boyega), best action performance (Boyega), best hero (Ridley), best villain (Adam Driver), best virtual performance (Andy Serkis and Lupita Nyong'o), ensemble cast and best fight, for Rey and Kylo Ren's face-off.
Recent hit Deadpool scored the second-most nominations with eight: movie of the year, best female performance (Morena Baccarin), best male performance (Ryan Reynolds), best comedic performance (Reynolds), best action performance (Reynolds), best villain (Ed Skrein), best kiss (Baccarin and Reynolds) and best fight, for Deadpool and Ajax's battle. Avengers: Age of Ultron scored six nominations: movie of the year, best hero (Chris Evans), best villain (James Spader), best virtual performance (Spader), ensemble cast and best fight (Iron Man vs. Hulk).
Several movies scored four nominations each: Mad Max: Fury Road, Pitch Perfect 2, The Revenant (including one for the epic battle between Leonardo DiCaprio's Hugh Glass and the bear) and TrainwreckJurassic World, Straight Outta Compton and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay landed three nominations apiece. Meanwhile, Concussion, Creed, Fifty Shades of Grey, Furious 7, Joy, San Andreas and Spy each landed two nominations.
This year, the Movie Awards have introduced two new categories: true story and documentary, both of which are filled with Oscar nominees and hopefuls.
Oscar nominees DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jennifer Lawrence will have a shot at MTV's best male and female prizes with best actress Oscar winner Brie Larson up for best breakthrough performance for her role in Room, facing off against her Trainwreck co-star Amy Schumer, who also earned a best comedic performance nomination.
MTV, which announced the Movie Awards nominees via its new Snapchat Discover channel, has also partnered with Google to allow fans to vote on the movie of the year winner by typing the keywords "MTV Vote" into the Google search bar. Fans can vote in other categories on MovieAwards.MTV.com. Voting closes on Sunday, March 20 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
"What has always been so cool about the MTV Movie Awards is that it's about blockbuster movies that audiences line up to see; comedies, superheroes, science fiction, fantasy, action,” executive producer Casey Patterson said in a statement. “This show is about fandom and the stars come out to celebrate that.  The nominees and the content are naturally diverse and eclectic because we're a true reflection of real movie-going audience.”
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Kevin Hart will co-host the 25th annual MTV Movie Awards, which is set to air on Sunday, April 10 at 8 p.m. from outdoors on the Warner Bros. backlot in Burbank, Calif.
