In weekend holdover box office news that it’s Deadpool-related, Kung Fu Panda 3 continued to show solid legs in its fourth weekend of release, earning $12.5 million for the weekend (-35%) for a new $117.1m domestic total. $150m domestic is still possible, although at this juncture it’s looking closer to $140m for theDreamWorks Animation sequel. And while it ran brisk but brief in China ($141m as of this writing), it still has the rest of the world to play in over the middle of next month.
Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.’s How to Be Single may be a bit frontloaded, dropping 54% for the weekend to earn $8.22m on its second frame. Still, the $38m Dakota Johnson/Rebel Wilson romantic comedy (which I need to catch up with this week) should have $31.5m by the end of the weekend, setting the course for a likely $45-$50m domestic total. It has eared $24.1m overseas as well.
Zoolander, No. 2 truly collapsed in its second weekend. The Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson/Penelope Cruz comedy sequel earned around $5.5 million (-60%) in weekend two for a $23.7m domestic total after ten days of release. Expect the $50m Paramount/Viacom Inc. sequel to finish with around $35m domestic, although it will do better overseas ($17.1m thus far) than the first film back in 2001.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to show remarkable strength regarding legs even as it slowly loses theaters. The Walt Disney blockbuster earned $3.836m (-ridiculous $921.6m cume. Expect this one to wrap up with around $935m domestic. Worldwide, it’s earned $2.039 billion. By the way, Zooptopia (which is friggin awesome) expanded overseas this weekend to earn $31m in 22 territories to bring its cume to $39m worldwide. That includes a record (for Disney animation) $9.2m debut in France and a $4.5m debut in Mexico, or about 25% bigger than Frozen‘s debut there. It opens in America on March 4th. Buy your tickets now. Oh, and The Finest Hours crossed $25m domestic.
The Revenant $3.8 million (-43%) as it slowly dropped screens (-327 for 1,9139 theaters). The Leonardo DiCaprio drama has now earned $165.1m domestic, which means it just passed Django Unchained ($162.8m) and Catch Me If You Can ($164.6m) today to become DiCaprio’s third biggest domestic smash. Okay, so the 20th Century Fox release (and possible Best Picture winner) isn’t going to catch up with Inception ($292m) or Titanic ($658m), but I don’t think anyone will be complaining.
Universal/Comcast Corp.’s Hail, Caesar! took a slight tumble in weekend three, earning $2.635 million for the frame (-59%). That gives the Coen brothers’ film a $26.085m cume. The $22m Coen brothers movie should end its run with around $35m domestic, which (not adjusted for inflation) is in the top half of their releases. And it could still break out overseas, where it has opened with $5.8m in 27 markets, so the book is not yet closed on this one. Ride Along 2 has earned $86.49m domestic and $114m worldwide, while The Boy earned $1.482m (-52%) for a $33m cume.
Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next earned $560,210k (-47%) on its second weekend to bring its total up to $1.987m. Come what may, the relentlessly optimistic documentary is going to be one of Moore’s lowest grossers. The better news is that The Big Short, which I presume Moore is a pretty big fan of, made $875,000 (-34%) in 432 theaters for a new $67.1m domestic cume and a $54.2m overseas cume for Paramount/Viacom Inc.
Also kicking Oscar butt is Brooklyn, which will earn $715,000k (-34%) for a new $34.5 million domestic cume. Spotlight should have around $485k for the weekend (-31%) for a new $38.06m cume while the Cate Blanchett/Rooney Mara romantic drama Carol should earn around $106k on 101 theaters for a new $12.3m domestic total after fourteen weeks. Meanwhile, Pride and Predijuce and Zombies crossed the $10m mark this weekend, Daddy’s Home has now earned $147.6m domestic and $86m overseas while Sisters has earned $86.6m in America. Oh, and The 5th Wave just topped $100m worldwide on a $35m budget despite barely cracking $31m domestic.
That’s the news for the weekend holdover box office report. Join me next weekend when we get Gods of Egypt, Triple 9, and Eddie the Eagle.
