Google Project Loon is About to be released

Although it seems like everyone is online, this is certainly not the case. In fact, two-thirds of the world population is not online. This is for several reasons including the two most prevalent, high costs and infrastructure. But what if that could all change? That is where Google’s newest project, PROJECT LOON, (quite appropriately named) comes in.
According to the OFFICIAL POST, Google believes it “may be possible to build a ring of balloons, flying around the globe on the stratospheric winds, that provides Internet access to the earth below.” Although still in its very early stages, the system uses balloons, carried by wind at altitudes twice as high as commercial planes, to “beam” Internet access to the ground. The idea is that the balloons could be an option for places currently unconnected- rural, remote, and underserved areas.
You can check out the video below which dives deeper into the technology behind the balloons.

As you may imagine, there are some challenges with this project, namely controlling the balloons. Using wind and solar power, the Google team figured out they could move the balloons to catch the winds they wanted the balloons to travel in. But that led to a new problem: how to manage a lot of balloons floating around the world so that each one is in the right area.
Recently, Google launched a pilot program in the Canterbury area of New Zealand with 50 testers trying to connect to our balloons. There are still many kinks to work out of course, but the idea that the entire world could be connected is huge. This would provide education and medical information to people currently without, would increase collaboration around the world, and think of the number of Google searches and results there would be.
